Cassowary

I’m the second biggest bird
Behind only the ostrich
And if you’ve never heard of me
Please don’t get discouraged!

For though I’m very big
I’m also very shy
And you won’t see me in the sky
Because I cannot fly!

I know it’s easy to confuse
Me with my cousin emu
They are taller; I am bigger,
And my head is blue!

Atop my pretty forehead
It looks like there’s a rock
But if you were to touch it
It would be soft just like a sock!

But please do not come near me
A modern dinosaur —
For in the middle of my foot’s
A claw like a raptor’s!

And if you want to know this bird
Open a dictionary!
And under “wonderful” you’ll find
The word for Cassowary!
